You know a restaurant has pride in their food when they only have one dish in their menu. Ildeung Sikdang, or #1 Restaurant, serves Ox bone soup. Better known by locals as the “hangover soup”, this soup is Korean’s hangover cure to have on a Saturday noon after a crazy night-out. Head into this old restaurant that’s been serving this one signature menu since 1986, and get a bowl almost overflowing with their delicious soup, seasoned with some doenjang–the infamous bean paste. Also, a quick tip: put some rice into the soup and eat them together, for a hearty, filling, and truly local meal.

It feels like visiting a close friend’s home and having some good food they prepared for you at this home-y Korean bar that serves great Makgeolli. The owner visits Makgeolli producers to find the best of the best, and his mom cooks the delectable dishes that go perfectly with the Makgeolli. So, if you order a dish, the owner will recommend you the best Makgeolli that will go with your food. I recommend you try out buckwheat jeonbyeong–think of it as a lightly fried, savory, rolled pancakeis an absolute must-try.

Enter through a narrow doorway down to the basement, and you’ll end up at this sheltered place, Coffee Shop Dongkyung. It’s neatly decorated and has a comforting atmosphere, but above all, it has fantastic coffee. This place has an especially strong reputation among locals, who call this place a “must-go cafe before you die”. Their Einspänner and almond mocha java are visitors’ favorites. The Einspänner, topped with luscious, milky cream, has an aromatic flavor that exceeds anyone’s expectations. The almond mocha java is perfect if you’re looking for something sweeter. The baristas carefully hand-drip all coffees to give you the best aroma and flavor, and you can watch them prepare your coffee with their artisan techniques.

Another insta-famous cafe that people line up for in Mangwon-dong: Atmosphere. Perhaps it’s named that way for the simple, yet beautiful and relaxing atmosphere this cafe exudes. Local Instagrammers love their cute and quirky, cartoon character-inspired macarons. Try their injeolmi–Koran bean powder rice cake–for a uniquely Korean dessert experience, or just choose your favorite characters to nibble away. You can also watch the pâtissier make all the cute macarons with the open-kitchen interior.

Bustling Attractions

1. Mangwon Market

망원시장_공식계정(official)(@mangwon.sijang)님의 공유 게시물님,

Mangwon Market is one of Seoul’s traditional markets. Mangwon Market might lack the glamour and scale of the famous (and frankly, tourist-filled) Gwangjang Market or Noryangjin Fish Market. But this market offers a sense of community and locality that larger markets might not be able to accommodate. It has great produce, tasty street and above all, hard-to-beat prices. If you’re in the area, it’s certainly worth a visit! But if you’re a bit weary of trying out unknown, new foods from these stalls, go walk around with a guide around the best street food places in Seoul!

Watch the sunset and enjoy the night breeze and the Mangwon-dong Han River Park to wrap up your day. Sit by the glistening Han river beside the Seongsan bridge, for a chill and relaxed moment to savor in the middle of this bustling city. Also, if you want to visit in the daytime, bring along a blanket and a quick picnic basket to enjoy the view. Han River, of course, is one of the most Instagrammable places in Mangwon-dong, so go on and pay a visit!
