Seoul is going through a record-breaking heatwave at the moment, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors to cool off! Thanks to the Hangang River Festival, the Han River transforms into a massive summer hangout from August 1st to August 16th. With night swims, outdoor movies under the bridge, water drone shows, silent DJ parties, and even all‑night “no sleep” programs spread across several parks, it’s a festival where you can cool off and enjoy the summer instead of hating it! The festival takes place year-round for all four seasons, so don’t be bummed out if you don’t get to check it out this time round!

1. No Sleep Weekend: Hangang All-Nighter

The No Sleep Weekend: Hangang All-Nighter is basically a huge slumber party by the river. For one night only, Mangwon Hangang Park and Seoul Battleship Park turn into an overnight festival, with zones dedicated to watching K-dramas and horror movies, late-night snacks, comics, retro arcade games, and board games, all completely free and open to anyone who wants to join in! Bring a mat, stock up on instant ramen and convenience-store treats, and watch the city slowly fade from neon to sunrise without ever leaving the Han River.
2. Hangang Eolssu Pongdang

Hangang Eolssu Pondang is a playful water-focused program that turns the water playground at Jamsil Hangang Park into a stage for traditional tightrope performances and hands-on fun. Taking place over the weekend, it blends slackline sessions with eoreum (tightrope) shows, so you can watch performers balance above the water and even try a bit of the action yourself if you’re feeling brave! It’s great if you want to enjoy a cultural performance with splashy, light-hearted summer vibes along the river.
3. Hangang Boat Race

The Hangang Boat Race is one of the most charmingly chaotic events at the Hangang River Festival. Instead of hopping on a regular boat, you build your own using items like rubber tubes, bamboo, PVC tape, and string, then race it out from Jamsil Hangang Park to collect summer fruit on the water before hedingback, all while trying not to tip over or sink mid-mission. The Hangang Under the Bridge Theater turns the spaces beneath three Han River bridges into free, open-air cinemas, giving you a movie night with river breezes and skyline views instead of a regular indoor theater. Screens are set up under Wonhyo, Cheongdam, and Cheonho Bridges at Yeouido, Ttukseom, and Gwangnaru Hangang Parks, and the program features a mix of family films, Korean hits, and special themed screenings, all with no tickets or fees required. It’s one of those “only in Seoul” summer experiences where you spread out a mat, grab convenience-store snacks, and watch a film as the lights of the city reflect on the water!

The Hangang Silent Disco Party is one of the most unique ways to spend a night by the river, swapping blaring speakers for wireless headphones and a shared playlist of EDM and K-pop. Pick up a headset, then join locals and travelers as everyone dances together in “silence” with the Han River night view as your backdrop. It’s fun, social, and a little surreal, especially when you step back and see hundreds of people moving in sync to music only they can hear! For a refreshing break from café-hopping and sightseeing, head to Ttukseom Hangang Park and get out on the water. Choose between a relaxed day or sunset kayak ride, stand-up paddleboarding, or a windsurfing session, all with equipment, a beginner-friendly lesson, and an English-speaking instructor included. It’s a fun way to see Seoul from a different angle, whether you want to paddle at your own pace or challenge yourself to catch the wind on the Han River.

b) Hi Seoul Cruise
For a slower way to take in Seoul, hop aboard the Hi! Seoul Cruise from Yeouido and watch the city unfold from the Han River. During the hour-long ride, you’ll pass the Yeouido skyline, Seogang Bridge, and Dangsan Railway Bridge, with wide-open views that are especially nice for photos. Live onboard performances add to the experience, while the modern boat gives you a comfortable spot to sit back and enjoy the breeze. Jamsil Hangang Park’s water playground is a great choice for families and anyone who wants a more relaxed pool day with a view. The eco-friendly space has a large Wonder Pool, a gentler Joy Pool, and a shallow children’s pool, plus an infinity-style wall that looks out toward the Han River. In previous summers, the pool has also hosted Hangang Cinema Splash, where visitors could float in the water or settle in poolside to watch a film on a large outdoor screen as the sun went down. While the 2026 festival program is featuring the Hangang Eolssu Pondang tightrope performances at Jamsil instead, the water playground remains a particularly nice sunset spot for a swim.
