Planning a trip to Thailand can be tricky due to the country’s distinct seasons and severe weather variation between regions. Unfortunately, just because the weather is nice in Bangkok does not mean you will have enjoyable weather in Koh Samui.

To help you out, we have prepared a complete guide to the weather in Thailand you must read to avoid mistakes like going for a beach getaway during a heavy rainfall season. This Thailand weather guide is divided into regions so that you can easily pick an area based on your travel dates or vice versa.

Generally, Thailand has broadly three seasons: hot, cool, and wet. However, the southern part of Thailand’s season is more so divided into two: wet and dry. If you are looking for a sunny beach holiday, make sure you visit the Land of Smiles during its drier months.

Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Mueang Chiang Rai, Pai, Lampang…)

Weather in Northern Thailand experiences a bigger seasonal temperature variation compared to the rest of the nation due to its relatively high elevation and latitude.

The best time to visit the northern cities such as Chiang Mai is from December to February when it is warm and dry. You might experience chilliness in the evening, so make sure to pack a light sweater.

Northern Thailand’s hot season begins around the end of February and lasts until April. It is then followed by a wet season from May until October. However, it is important to note that the rain only falls one to two hours a day on average, so the monsoon should not deter you too much from visiting this area during these months.

Out of the northern destinations in Thailand, we recommend you to visit Chiang Mai, especially in November, which is when you will be able to enjoy the Chiang Mai Lantern Festival and witness the one-of-a-kind scene where thousands of lit paper lanterns fill up the night sky.

The southern part of Thailand is divided into the west (Andaman Sea/Phuket/Krabi) and east (Gulf Coast/ Ko Samui). It is important to note the difference as the weather of these regions differ even though they are both in the south.

Southwestern Thailand (Andaman Sea, Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak…)

If you are looking for a beach holiday in Southwestern Thailand, the best time for you to visit the area is from December to April, when it is warm and dry. During these months, cities like Phuket and Krabi becomes a summer paradise where you can sit by the Andaman Sea and relax.

Southwestern Thailand’s wet season starts in May and lasts until October. During this season, you will experience hot weather with frequent rain showers. However, similar to the Northern region, the rain showers occur for only one to two hours a day on average. If you are traveling on a tight budget, visiting the Andaman Sea area during its wet season might be a good idea, as accommodations are relatively cheaper.

While you are in the Andaman Sea area, we recommend you take a tour around the islands near the coast. Phi Phi Islands, Khai Islands, and James Bond Island are some of the most famous destinations where you can enjoy the soft sand and emerald blue ocean while snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing. You can reach these islands from both Phuket and Krabi.

Southeastern Thailand (Gulf Coast, Ko Samui, Phangan, Kho Tao… )

Southeastern Thailand is a region that is warm and humid throughout the year. The best time to visit Southeastern Thailand is practically every month except during its wet season from September to December.

January to April is Southeastern Thailand’s relatively drier months. There is a chance you might still experience rain, but they will be most likely quick showers.

From the end of April, there is an increase in the temperature as well as the quick rain showers that happen either in the afternoon at night. Because there is an increase in rain, accommodations are usually cheaper during this time. However, once again, the rain showers are not extreme and therefore, if you are looking to travel on a budget, April to early September might be the best time to travel to this region for you.

October to early December is when it rains the most frequently and most heavily, which makes these months the least appropriate time to be in this region.

The best way to enjoy Southeastern Thailand is to absorb its scenic nature sites, especially by the clear blue water. The stunning islands of Ang Thong National Marine Park in the Gulf of Thailand are especially known for its untouched nature and offer a site for fun water activities. Take a visit to the Ang Thong National Marine Park and make sure to snorkel or kayak to see some underwater creatures!
