When we think of spring we usually stir up the image of pinkish cherry blossoms abloom, dozens of their trees lining the streets to form a canopy of some sort. But, what if we told you, those rosy friends weren’t the only types of flowers you could surround yourself with this spring?
How about these golden florae to keep you company this spring? Cornelian cherry, canola, and forsythia flowers really ring in the return of spring.

Expected Blooming Period

  • Cornelian Cherry

Cornelian cherry flowers, Korea’s earliest spring heralds, bloom from early to mid-March, lighting up southern regions like Gurye, Gyeongju and Jeju first, followed by central areas.

  • Canola Flowers

Canola flowers typically bloom from mid-March to early April across Korea, starting earliest on Jeju Island (late March peak) and mainland spots like Busan by April.

  • Forsythia

Forsythia bursts into bright yellow blooms in early to mid-March nationwide, often alongside the first signs of spring before cherry blossoms, with Jeju seeing them slightly earlier.

Let’s start off with the first of the Sansuyu festivals in Korea – the Gurye Sansuyu Festival, one that takes place in Jeollanam-do. As these flowers begin to blossom in mid-March, it is actually one of the first flower festivals to mark the start of spring in Korea. Here you’ll be greeted by a sea of golden Sansuyu flowers covering every nook and cranny of the land. It’s a sight that will definitely get you excited for spring.

2) Icheon Sansuyu Festival

  • Location: 17, Wonjeok-ro 775beon-gil, Icheon-si, Gyeonggi-do (Kakao Map)

Tucked away in Wonjeonksan Mountain in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do awaits the Icheon Sansuyu Festival, another beautiful site where you can admire the yellow flowers in Korea. Populated by dozens and dozens of Sansuyu trees over 100 years old, enjoy a relaxing day out in the open. There are even a few events such as a mini concert to make this festival even more memorable!

3) Yangpyeong Sansuyu Hanwoo Festival

Guri Hangang Park is of course another place you can visit to enjoy the flowers of spring. With the vibrant colors of the bright yellow canola flowers in full bloom around May, you might not think about visiting anywhere else.
