Ultimate Guide to the Seoul Outdoor Library 2026

If you’re looking for a relaxing little break to enjoy the sun and soft breeze in Seoul as the weather warms up, the Outdoor Library is a must-visit! Open from late April to June, then September to early November, it’s an open-air reading space where you can grab a book, sit outside, and enjoy the city at a lower pace; best of all, it’s completely free to visit. With thousands of books, including a section in English, Seoul‘s outdoor libraries are spread across four main locations. Read on for a full guide to each spot!

1. Gwanghwamun

  • Address: 175 Sejong-daero, Jongno-gu, Seoul (Kakao Maps)
  • Dates & Hours: Apr 23 ~ Jun 28 (only operating every Friday, Saturday, & Sunday)
    • Apr 23rd (Thurs)~Apr 24th (Fri) 4:00 PM-10:00 PM
    • Apr 25th (Sat) 11:00 AM-5:00 PM
    • Apr 26th (Sun) 4:00 PM-10:00 PM

The Gwanghwamun Outdoor Library is right next to Gwanghwamun Square and is one of the easiest places to visit if you’re already exploring central Seoul. The space is set up with comfy seating in the form of beanbag chairs and private reading pods, themed reading zones, and book-focused programs, so it feels more like a relaxed public hangout than a formal library.

2. Seoul Plaza

  • Address: 54-3, Taepyeong-ro 1-ga, Jung-gu, Seoul (Kakao Maps)
  • Dates: May 1st (Fri)~May 5th (Tues)
  • Hours: 11:00 AM-6:00 PM

Seoul Plaza Outdoor Library, also branded as “Reading Seoul Plaza,” is the biggest and busiest of the Seoul Outdoor Library spots. The whole open space in front of City Hall turns into a big, relaxed zone where you can lie on beanbags, browse books, and soak up the city vibe for free. There are also occasional performances and play facilities for kids, so it feels like a reading festival as much as a library!

3. Cheonggyecheon Stream

  • Address: Changsin-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul (Kakao Maps)
  • Dates & Hours: Apr 23 ~ Jun 28 (only operating every Friday, Saturday, & Sunday) 
    • Apr 23rd (Thurs) 4:00 PM-10:00 PM
    • Apr 24th (Fri)~Apr 26th (Sun) 11:00 AM-6:00 PM

The Cheonggyecheon Outdoor Library, also called “Reading by the Clear Stream,” is considered to be one of the most atmospheric of the Seoul Outdoor Libraries, as it runs right along the Cheonggyecheon stream in the middle of downtown Seoul. It turns the stretch of water between Mojeongyo Bridge and Gwangtong Bridge into a super scenic, open-air reading space where you can sit on chairs or benches by the water, flip through books, and just unplug for a while.

4. Hangang Parks

The Hangang Outdoor Libraries turn the Han River into a big, relaxed reading zone where you can enjoy books with a river view and a gentle breeze. It’s more like a riverside reading festival than a traditional library, with cozy seating, comfy mats, and a selection of around 5,000 books for all ages, plus small performances and family‑friendly activities sprinkled through the program.

a. Yeouido Hangang Park

  • Dates: April 11th (Sat)~May 23rd (Sat) (*Typically operate on Saturdays only)

  • Hours: 12:00 PM-6:00 PM (April), 1:00 PM-8:00 PM (May)
Yeouido Hangang Park is the biggest and most event-packed of the Hangang outdoor library spots, giving the whole riverside a relaxed, book-picnic feeling. With plenty of seating and open space for families, couples, and casual visitors, the vibe here is less about quiet reading and more about spreading out on a mat, enjoying the river view, and making a day out of reading while enjoying performances and playing outdoors! It’s also the most visited of all Hangang Parks, so you know there’s always something to do here.

b. Jamwon Hangang Park

  • Address: 386 Apgujeong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul (Kakao Maps)
Jamwon Hangang Park is a riverside park in Seocho-gu, famous for its open grassy space, bike paths, sports facilities, and seasonal scenery like the reed field and pink muhly grass. It’s also near trendy neighborhoods like Garosu-gil and Apgujeong, which makes it easy to combine a park visit with a cafe or shopping stop, ideal for slowing down a bit before or after exploring the city.

c. Gwangnaru Hangang Park

  • Address: 659-1 Amsa-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul (Kakao Maps)

Gwangnaru Hangang Park is one of Seoul’s most natural-looking riverside parks, with reed beds, sandbars, and a quieter atmosphere than some of the busier Hangang spots. If you love nature and being active, you’ll find bicycle paths, sports fields, a children’s playground, and a swimming pool in summer. If you want a park that feels less crowded and more spacious, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Ichon Hangang Park is one of those Seoul parks that has a little bit of everything. You can walk by the river, bike, skate, or just enjoy the open space and seasonal plants while taking in the Han River view.  It also has a calm, everyday feel that makes it easy to spend more time there than you planned. If you’re looking for a park that feels active but not overwhelming, this is another nice option along the river.

The Seoul Outdoor Libraries are more than just places to read; they also feature special events that make each spot feel a little different.
